Despite boasting several young talents in 2002/03, including Joe Cole, Jermain Defoe, Glen Johnson and Michael Carrick, West Ham had a disastrous start to the season which saw them win just 3 out of their first 24 matches.
Manager Glenn Roeder then had to resign due to health issues and he was replaced by club legend Sir Trevor Brooking as caretaker manager. The teams luck began to change and a run of good results saw them go into the final day with a chance of staying up but they needed a 7 goal win to be sure of escaping relegation. A 2–2 draw saw the Hammers relegated to the 2nd tier for the first time since 1992.
