After early season hype and an expected title push failed to materialize as the club finished 3rd in the league. An FA Cup final defeat to rivals United further cemented the disappointment. 

The end of the season also saw Ian Rush score his final goal for the Reds. After more than 300 goals in 2 spells at the club over the last 16 years, he would leave on a free transfer at the end of the season.
