2005/06 saw Gillingham start the season poorly, continuing on from the form which saw the club relegated on goal difference in 2004/05. By mid November manager Neale Cooper had been sacked and was replaced by assistant manager Ronnie Jepson.

This was intended to be a temporary solution until a permanent successor was found but Jepson improved results including a 6 game winning run across March and April, leading the club to a 14th placed finish in the league.
