In an attempt to improve on their 15th placed finish the previous year, Sunderland backed Roy Keane and broke club records to secure Michael Chopra, Craig Gordon and Kenwyne Jones.

However, despite some positive performances, including the historic 2–1 Tyneside home derby victory (the first time the club had accomplished this in 28 years) the team's general form, remained inconsistent. With Sunderland 18th in the league, Keane stood down as manager and he was replaced with Ricky Sbragia. Jones and the on loan Djibril Cisse both scored 10 goals each to keep the club up, finishing 15th.
