After winning the Copa Del Rey in 2005/06, Espanyol entered the UEFA Cup where they won all their group games before progressing through the knockout stages to reach the final.

In the final, Espanyol lost to fellow La Liga side Sevilla 3–1 on penalties following a 2–2 draw. They became the only football team in UEFA Cup history to remain unbeaten throughout the entire tournament and not take home the trophy.
