Chelsea began the 1997/98 season well, however when manager Ruud Gullit was sacked after a dispute with the club chairman he was replaced with striker Gianluca Vialli. Within 3 months he had guided the Blues to victory in the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup and the League Cup.
