Following a poor showing in the Bundesliga in 1997/98, where they finished 10th, Dortmund only had domestic competition to focus on in the 1998/99 season. The team finished 4th to once again qualify for Europe under Michael Skibbe, who at the time was the youngest head coach in Bundesliga history.
