West Ham United enjoyed an improved Premier League campaign during 1997/98, finishing eighth under Harry Redknapp after narrowly avoiding relegation the previous season.

Having finished 14th in 1996/97, West Ham entered the new campaign looking to establish greater consistency and build upon the attacking partnership of John Hartson and Paul Kitson. The squad featured established players including Julian Dicks, Steve Lomas, Eyal Berkovic, Ian Bishop and goalkeeper Luděk Mikloško, alongside promising youngsters such as Rio Ferdinand and Frank Lampard.

Hartson emerged as one of the Premier League's most effective strikers, developing into an important attacking figure following his arrival from Arsenal in February 1997. The Welsh international finished as West Ham's leading goalscorer with 15 Premier League goals and 24 across all competitions, while Kitson continued to provide an additional attacking threat.

Israeli midfielder Berkovic also enjoyed an influential campaign, contributing seven league goals and providing creativity in midfield. West Ham strengthened their squad during the season with the arrival of Trevor Sinclair from Queens Park Rangers, adding further attacking quality and versatility.

The Hammers remained competitive throughout the campaign, eventually finishing eighth in the Premier League with 56 points, narrowly missing out on qualification for European competition. Their performances represented a significant improvement upon the previous season, with Redknapp continuing to develop a squad combining experienced players and emerging academy talent.

In the FA Cup, West Ham progressed to the quarter-finals before suffering elimination against Arsenal, while their League Cup campaign also ended at the quarter-final stage. Although the campaign concluded without silverware, West Ham's improved league position reflected the progress made under Redknapp and provided a foundation for further success.

The following season would see the Hammers finish fifth in the Premier League, their highest league position since the introduction of the competition in 1992.

Produced by Pony, the 1997/98 West Ham United home shirt featured the club's traditional claret-and-blue colours. The design represents an important period under Redknapp, closely associated with Hartson's goalscoring performances and the emergence of future England internationals Ferdinand and Lampard.

Condition
Condition: 8/10 - Excellent

Each item is individually inspected and graded by our team to ensure an accurate representation of its condition.

Every item at The Soccer Archive is individually assessed and graded on our condition scale out of 10. This rating takes into account the overall quality of the fabric, print, badges and any natural signs of wear that come with age.

Most pieces we sell are vintage or pre-owned, meaning small signs of age can be part of their character.

Our condition guide

10/10 - Brand New with Tags
Outstanding condition with no noticeable flaws. Tags may or may not be present, but the item shows little to no sign of wear.

9/10 - Mint
Very strong vintage condition. May show the lightest signs of storage or previous wear, but nothing that distracts from the item overall.

8/10 - Excellent
A well-kept piece with minor signs of age or use. This could include light bobbling, slight fading or very small marks, but it still presents really well.

7/10 - Very Good
Noticeable wear consistent with age. This may include moderate fading, small pulls, bobbling, minor cracking to print or a small mark.

6/10 and below - Good with Noticeable Signs of Wear
More obvious signs of wear or ageing. This might include heavier fading, marks, pulls, print wear or repairs.

Any notable flaws will always be highlighted in the product description and imagery.

Product Care

- Do not tumble dry

Storage

- Store in a cool, dry place
- Keep away from damp environments or direct sunlight
- For long-term storage, fold carefully to avoid stressing prints and badges
- If hanging, use a wide/padded hanger to help maintain shape

Protecting prints, badges and sponsor logos

- Do not iron directly over prints, namesets, patches or sponsor logos
