Valencia finished sixth in La Liga during the 2008/09 campaign under Unai Emery, securing qualification for the following season's UEFA Europa League during a period of transition at the Mestalla.
Having finished tenth in the league the previous season, Valencia appointed Emery during the summer of 2008 following his successful spell with Almería. The squad featured influential players including David Villa, David Silva, Juan Mata, Joaquín, Carlos Marchena, Raúl Albiol, Éver Banega and goalkeeper Renan.
Valencia entered the campaign as defending Copa del Rey champions, having defeated Getafe in the previous season's final.
Their first competitive challenge came in the Supercopa de España against Real Madrid. Despite securing a 3–2 victory in the first leg at the Mestalla, Valencia suffered a 4–2 defeat at the Santiago Bernabéu, losing 6–5 on aggregate.
In La Liga, Emery's side began the campaign strongly, establishing themselves among the leading contenders for European qualification. However, inconsistent performances during the middle of the season prevented Valencia from maintaining a sustained challenge for the Champions League places.
Villa remained the team's most influential attacking player, enjoying another prolific campaign in front of goal. The Spanish international scored 28 league goals, finishing behind only Diego Forlán and Samuel Eto'o in the race for the Pichichi Trophy. Mata also enjoyed an impressive season, contributing goals and creativity alongside Silva and Joaquín.
Valencia eventually finished sixth in La Liga with 62 points, securing qualification for the Europa League. In the UEFA Cup, Valencia progressed through the group stage before facing Dynamo Kyiv in the Round of 32.
Following a 1–1 draw in Ukraine, the return fixture at the Mestalla ended 2–2, with Dynamo progressing on away goals. Valencia also reached the Copa del Rey quarter-finals, where they were eliminated by Sevilla.
Although the campaign ended without silverware, the club's sixth-place finish represented an improvement upon the previous season and established the foundations for further progress under Emery.
Produced by Nike, the 2008/09 Valencia away shirt featured a predominantly black colourway with contrasting orange detailing around the collar, sleeves and shoulders. The design incorporated the Valencia crest, orange Nike branding and the Valencia Experience sponsor, creating a distinctive alternative to the club's traditional white home colours.
Worn during Emery's first season in charge, the shirt became associated with the attacking performances of Villa, Silva and Mata as Valencia returned to European qualification. Its understated black design and vibrant orange accents make it a recognisable example of Valencia's late-2000s Nike apparel.

Condition
Each item is individually inspected and graded by our team to ensure an accurate representation of its condition.
Every item at The Soccer Archive is individually assessed and graded on our condition scale out of 10. This rating takes into account the overall quality of the fabric, print, badges and any natural signs of wear that come with age.
Most pieces we sell are vintage or pre-owned, meaning small signs of age can be part of their character.
Our condition guide
10/10 - Brand New with Tags
Outstanding condition with no noticeable flaws. Tags may or may not be present, but the item shows little to no sign of wear.
9/10 - Mint
Very strong vintage condition. May show the lightest signs of storage or previous wear, but nothing that distracts from the item overall.
8/10 - Excellent
A well-kept piece with minor signs of age or use. This could include light bobbling, slight fading or very small marks, but it still presents really well.
7/10 - Very Good
Noticeable wear consistent with age. This may include moderate fading, small pulls, bobbling, minor cracking to print or a small mark.
6/10 and below - Good with Noticeable Signs of Wear
More obvious signs of wear or ageing. This might include heavier fading, marks, pulls, print wear or repairs.
Any notable flaws will always be highlighted in the product description and imagery.
