Sampdoria finished the 2008/09 season in 13th place but it was in the Coppa Italia where the team performed the best. After reaching the final, the team were defeated 6-5 in a penalty shootout with Hugo Campagnaro missing the crucial spot-kick. Antonio Cassano was the team's top scorer with 15 goals in all competitions.
