After their 2002/03 3rd place league finish, Newcastle entered qualification rounds for the Champions League but were eliminated after a penalty shootout dropping them into the UEFA Cup. The Magpies reached the semi-finals of the UEFA Cup before being knocked out in the semi-finals, 2–0 on aggregate.

2004/05 began poorly for Newcastle, with no wins in their first four matches, and manager Bobby Robson was sacked with Graeme Souness being brought in as his replacement. Despite a positive start, the team were not competitive enough to push for European places and could only finish 14th in the league.
