Liverpool challenged for the Premier League title during the 1996/97 campaign under Roy Evans, leading the table for periods of the season before eventually finishing fourth, seven points behind champions Manchester United.

Having finished third the previous season, Liverpool entered the new campaign hoping to build upon their progress and secure their first league championship since 1989/90.

The squad featured established players including Robbie Fowler, Steve McManaman, Stan Collymore, Jamie Redknapp, John Barnes and goalkeeper David James, alongside emerging talents such as Jamie Carragher and Michael Owen.

Liverpool remained among the leading contenders throughout much of the campaign, producing several impressive attacking performances as Evans continued to favour an expansive style of football. Fowler enjoyed another prolific season, finishing as Liverpool's leading goalscorer with 31 goals across all competitions, while Collymore and McManaman provided additional attacking quality.

The Reds occupied first place in the Premier League around the turn of the year, although inconsistent performances during the closing months allowed Manchester United to establish an advantage. Liverpool eventually finished fourth with 68 points, narrowly missing out on a higher league position in a closely contested battle for the European qualification places.

In the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup, Liverpool progressed through the competition before facing Paris Saint-Germain in the semi-finals.

The Reds suffered a 3–0 defeat in the first leg at the Parc des Princes, leaving them facing a difficult task in the return fixture at Anfield. Despite securing a 2–0 victory through goals from Fowler and Mark Wright, Liverpool were eliminated 3–2 on aggregate, ending their hopes of reaching the European final.

The campaign also marked the emergence of Owen, who made his senior debut at the age of 17 against Wimbledon in May 1997. The young forward scored Liverpool's only goal in a 2–1 defeat, beginning a first-team career that would see him become one of the club's leading attacking players.

James remained Liverpool's first-choice goalkeeper throughout the campaign, playing an important role behind a defensive unit featuring Wright, Neil Ruddock and Jason McAteer. Although the season concluded without silverware, Liverpool's title challenge and European semi-final appearance represented another competitive campaign under Evans.

Produced by Reebok, the 1996/97 Liverpool goalkeeper shirt featured a predominantly yellow design with contrasting detailing, complemented by the Carlsberg sponsor. Associated with David James and Liverpool's Premier League title challenge and UEFA Cup Winners' Cup semi-final appearance, the shirt represents one of the club's distinctive goalkeeper designs from the mid-1990s.

Condition
Condition: 8/10 - Excellent

Each item is individually inspected and graded by our team to ensure an accurate representation of its condition.

Every item at The Soccer Archive is individually assessed and graded on our condition scale out of 10. This rating takes into account the overall quality of the fabric, print, badges and any natural signs of wear that come with age.

Most pieces we sell are vintage or pre-owned, meaning small signs of age can be part of their character.

Our condition guide

10/10 - Brand New with Tags
Outstanding condition with no noticeable flaws. Tags may or may not be present, but the item shows little to no sign of wear.

9/10 - Mint
Very strong vintage condition. May show the lightest signs of storage or previous wear, but nothing that distracts from the item overall.

8/10 - Excellent
A well-kept piece with minor signs of age or use. This could include light bobbling, slight fading or very small marks, but it still presents really well.

7/10 - Very Good
Noticeable wear consistent with age. This may include moderate fading, small pulls, bobbling, minor cracking to print or a small mark.

6/10 and below - Good with Noticeable Signs of Wear
More obvious signs of wear or ageing. This might include heavier fading, marks, pulls, print wear or repairs.

Any notable flaws will always be highlighted in the product description and imagery.

Storage

- Store in a cool, dry place
- Keep away from damp environments or direct sunlight

Protecting prints, badges and sponsor logos

- Do not iron directly over prints, namesets, patches or sponsor logos
