2011/12 proved to be an unsettling one for Inter with 3 permanent managers throughout the season. Gasperini started the season in charge but after a poor start in Serie A and losing the Supercoppa final he was sacked in late September and replaced with Claudio Ranieri.

Mixed form continued under the new manager and following a run of 10 games with just 1 victory, he was sacked after a 2–0 defeat to the Old Lady. Andrea Stramaccioni came in and picked up 5 wins in the 9 final games to secure 6th and the final European spot for Inter.
