Arsenal were in the middle of a difficult spell with Arsene Wenger during 2017/18 and this was the first season that Arsenal did not participate in the Champions League in 20 years.

A 6th-place finish, an early exit from the FA Cup, along with a League Cup final defeated didn't improve things and long serving manager Arsène Wenger announced his departure  to bring his 22 year association with the club to an end.
