Norwich finished 6th in 2001/02, sneaking into the play-offs on goal difference. The Canaries were eventually defeated on penalties at the Millennium Stadium following a 1-1 draw after extra time.

2002/03 season saw the Canaries made an impressive start with just one defeat in their first 14 league games which saw them amongst the candidates for promotion but just 7 league wins after Christmas saw Norwich miss out on a play-off spot.
