2016/17 saw Aston Villa back in the second tier for the first time in over 25 years. Roberto Di Matteo was appointed manager in June but he only lasted until October when he was sacked and replaced by Steve Bruce. The Villans eventually finished 13th in the Championship with forward Jonathan Kodija ending the season as the club's top scorer with 19 goals in all competitions.
