The poor form that the Sunderland had ended the 2001/02 with continued into 2002/03 and it resulted in Peter Reid being sacked after 7 years in October. Howard Wilkinson was brought in and after an initial upturn in results Sunderland earnt just 1 point after Christmas. Wilkinson was sacked in March and Mick McCarthy was hired as his replacement.
The change proved too little too late as the club ended the season with a staggering run of 15 consecutive defeats and setting new records for the fewest goals scored by a top-flight club along with the lowest points total for a club since the competition began.
