2019 saw New York City finish top of the Eastern Conference but they were unable to progress past the semi-finals of the play-offs after losing 2-1.

2020 saw the club compete in the CONCACAF Champions League for the first time and they reached the quarter finals before a 5-0 aggregate defeat eliminated them from the competition.
