Following their title win the previous season, Marseille were flying high and won the Trophée des Champions thanks to a penalty shootout victory but were brought back down to earth after suffering an opening day defeat to newly promoted Caen.

The team ultimately finished 2nd in Ligue 1 but won the Coupe de la Ligue for the 2nd year in a row after a 1-0 victory to retain their trophy.
