A mixed few seasons for Dundee United in this classy away shirt. United finished in bottom of the 1994/95 First Division and were relegated, their first spell outside the Premier Division since its inception in 1975. Ivan Golac, who led them to the Scottish Cup success the previous year, was sacked in March and replaced with Billy Kirkwood who's record was less than impressive, losing 9 of the final 11 games.

After missing out on the 1995/96 automatic promotion, United won promotion through the play-offs, winning 3–2 over two legs. The club also lost on penalties in the Scottish Challenge Cup final, having not conceded during the entire tournament.
