2023/24 was a turbulent season for Roma with José Mourinho fired after 2 years with the club sitting 9th in the Serie A and eliminated from the Coppa Italia. He was replaced by former club captain Daniele De Rossi, initially on a contract until the end of the season before being appointed permanently by the club owners.

De Rossi steered the club to a 6th place finish which secured a position in the newly revamped Europa League. On loan striker Romelu Lukaku ended the season as the club's top scorer with 21 goals in all competitions.
