Prior to the start of the season, a criminal investigation was launched into the owners takeover of the club which ended with other SFL member clubs voting to offer Rangers a place in the 3rd Division for the start of the season.

Ally McCoist remained with the club as the majority of the first team left and the club promoted a number of youth prospects, mainly due to a 12 month transfer ban which prevented it from registering any players over 18. The club won the league with ease to earn promotion and start their rise back to the top of Scottish football.
