Rangers started the 2001/02 poorly and Dick Advocaat resigned as manager in December, moving up to boardroom. Alex McLeish and the clubs form improved under McLeish with just 1 defeat until the end of the season. The damage had already been done as their Old Firm rivals continued to the SPL title.
Despite the disappointment in the league, McLeish lead Rangers to success in both domestic cup competitions. Most notably gaining revenge in the Scottish Cup final against their Old Firm rivals with a dramatic last minute goal from Peter Løvenkrands saw Rangers win the game 3–2.
