Marseille participated in the Champions League group stages before being eliminated but it was the UEFA Cup where the team made it all the way to the final before losing 2-0.

Domestically, the team struggled as they finished 7th despite of having the league player of the season in Didier Drogba in the team. The Ivorian striker netted 19 league goals in his sole season with the club before he moved to the Premier League.
