Having equalled the record of 18 English league titles the previous season, United were looking to break that record with an unprecedented 4th consecutive Premier League title in 2009–10. They were however beaten to the title by a single point.

They also had the chance to be the first team to reach 3 consecutive Champions League finals the late 90's but they were knocked out in the quarter-finals. United won the League Cup for the 2nd season in a row, the first time United had ever successfully defended a major cup.
