United finished the season trophyless for only the 4th time in 17 years, finishing 3rd in the league, eliminated in the 1st knockout round in the Champions League Milan and knocked out of the League Cup in the semi-finals.

The FA Cup was their last chance of silverware and despite dominating the final the team lost on penalties. Leading goalscorer Wayne Rooney was voted PFA Young Player of the Year and United also ended the Gunner's record-breaking 49-game unbeaten league run with a 2–0 home win in late October.
