Roberto Mancini's first full season in charge is best remembered for City's run in the FA Cup, which saw them defeat their main rivals in the semi-finals before lifting the trophy after a 1-0 victory in the final. 

It ended City's 35-year wait for silverware and signified the start of a new era under their new ownership. The club also finished 3rd in the Premier League, qualifying for the Champions League, something they had not achieved since 1967–68.
