1997/98 saw Fulham changes on and off the field as new owners quickly replaced manager Micky Adams despite his promotion the previous season. Ray Wilkins and Kevin Keegan were appointed as head coach and director of football respectively and steered the team to the play-offs.
Despite this, Wilkins was sacked and Keegan given the hotseat where he was unable to achieve promotion after they were beaten 2–1 on aggregate. Striker Paul Moody was the club's top scorer with 15 goals.
