2017/18 saw the return of Wayne Rooney, nearly 15 years after he left the club. Everton had a disappointing start to the campaign, leading to manager Ronald Koeman being sacked  just 2 months into his second season. Sam Allardyce took the job and guided the club to 8th placed finish in the league, despite this he was sacked at the end of the season to complete a unsettled year for the Toffees.
