2001/02 was a mixed season for Rovers as the team won just 4 of their first 14 league games leaving them deep in a relegation battle, following their promotion the previous season. A run in the League Cup ended with a 2-1 victory in the final to secure the club's first trophy since their Premier League title.
Striker Andy Cole arrived in December which sparked a turnaround in form and the team climbed up the table to secure a 10th placed finish. At the end of the season, striker Mark Hughes retired at the age of 38, after a playing career spanning 22 years that had yielded 2 league titles, 4 FA Cups, a Cup Winners' Cup and 3 League Cups.
