2021/22 saw Atalanta finish 8th in Serie A which meant missing out on European competitions the following season. After being eliminated from the group stages of the Champions League, the team did make it to the quarter finals of the Europa League before being knocked out 3-1 on aggregate.

Both Luis Muriel and Mario Pašalić scored 14 goals each in all competitions to share the club's golden boot.
