Following their double winning campaign the previous season, Arsenal wanted to continue their dominance however the fell just short in defending both of their titles. They missed out on the league title by a single point on the last day of the season and lost in an FA Cup semi-final replay courtesy of Ryan Giggs famous extra time winner.

Arsenal competed in the Champions League for the first time since its rebrand in 1992, but failed to progress past the group stage.
