Cagliari returned to the top flight for the 1990/91 season, finishing in 14th place under Claudio Ranieri. After a slow start, the team found them bottom of the table but consistent results moved them away from the drop zone and they confirmed survival on the penultimate day of the season.

Daniel Fonseca was the stand out for the season, scoring 8 goals along with Enzo Francescoli and José Oscar Herrera scoring 4 each.
