Worn across 2 seasons, this design saw City relegated in 1997/98 to see City playing in the third tier for the first time in their history in 1998/99. A frustrating first few months of the season mounted the pressure on manager Joe Royle, but the Maine Road board kept faith in him and rewarded by an upturn in form which saw them finish third in the final table and secure a play-off spot.
City took on Gillingham in the Wembley final but were 2-0 down with 90 minutes on the clock. 2 quickfire goals in added time forced extra time and City went on to win the tie on penalties and sealing an instant return to Division One.
