2016–17 was the club's only season under manager Claude Puel, who had replaced from Ronald Koeman. The club finished 8th in the league and also appeared in the Europa League but were eliminated during the group stage.

The Saint also made it to their 1st major cup final in 23 years but lost the EFL Cup Final after conceding in the 87th minute, losing 3–2.
