Things didn't go to plan however, as they lost 4-2 on aggregate and dropped into the UEFA Cup. A heavy away defeat in their first round UEFA Cup contest cost the Toffees and despite winning the home leg they were eliminated after a 5-2 aggregate defeat.
In the league, a poor start saw the team in the relegation zone in mid November however a steady 2nd half of the season saw the team climb to the safety of 11th placed. The end of the season saw the retirement of striker Duncan Ferguson who would depart as the highest scoring Scotsman ever in the Premier League's history.
