As disappointing year for Bayern saw Ottmar Hitzfeld sacked at the end of a trophy-less season. New signing Roy Makaay scored 23 league goals, adapting smoothly to the Bundesliga but defensive performances were not good enough to overhaul their title challengers at the end of the season.
