In 1998/99 Liverpool appointed Gérard Houllier as joint manager alongside Roy Evans but the latter did not enjoy the partnership and resigned in November with the Frenchman leading the team to a 7th placed finish in the league.

The shirt design also carried over to the 1999/00 season and was used as the club third shirt. The teams performances improved on the previous season as they secured a 4th placed position in the league. Michael Owen's goal continued to drive the club forward as he lead the goal scoring charts in both of the seasons that this shirt was worn.
