In 1994/95, Sunderland found themselves in a relegation battle mainly due to the lack of goals which ended up costing manager Mick Buxton his job. Peter Reid was appointed as his replacement and he successfully achieved his goal of avoiding relegation which ended with the club offering him a permanent contract.
The following season was a complete contrast, as the club marched to the First Division title and gained promotion to the Premier League for the first time.
