After 9 successive seasons of top flight football the Owl's started the 2000/01 season in the Division One with hopes of an immediate return to the Premier League but in reality this was nowhere near what was happening on the pitch.

After being in and out of the relegation zone all season manager Paul Jewell was sacked in mid February with assistant manager Peter Shreeves was taking over on a permanent basis. He managed to improve the teams fortunes and guided them to a 17th-place finish after winning 8 games in the remaining part of the season.
