Worn over 2 seasons, 2003/04 season ended trophy-less. This was mainly due to the club's financial situation they had to resort to selling many top players such as Barry Ferguson and Lorenzo Amoruso. Inconsistent form and 3 Old Firm derby defeats saw Rangers fall behind their rivals in the title race and 17 points off top spot.

The start of the 2004/05 season saw the departure of the De Boer brothers however it didn't hinder the team as they won the SPL and Scottish League Cup double. The final day of the season became known amongst fans as 'Helicopter Sunday' due to the aircraft delivering the trophy having to change direction mid-flight as a late goal sent the title to Ibrox .
