1989/90 saw Oldham finish 8th in the league, missing out on the playoffs by just 3 points. They also reached the FA Cup Semi-Finals for only the 2nd time in their history and the final of the League Cup, the club's first ever appearance at Wembley.

1990/91 saw the club gain promotion to the top flight after an absence of 68 years after finishing in 1st place under Joe Royle. Striker Ian Marshall provided the fire power with 18 goals in the league for the Latics.
