2021/22 saw the return of Max Allegri as coach after 2 years after the Old Lady finished 4th the previous season. He was unable to deliver a league title as they once again finished 4th and missed out of the Coppa Italia after losing the final 4–2 in extra time.

It would be the first season since 2010-11 the club would finish without a trophy. Paulo Dybala ended the season as the club's top scorer with 15 goals in all competitions.
