Following an 18th placed finish in 2004/05 man expected the same for the Mariners in 2005/06 however they finished 4th and secured a place in the play-offs. They club were in the hunt for an automatic promotion spot in early April but a run of 1 win their last 6 games meant they finished 3 points off 3rd spot.

In the play-off final they lost out to Cheltenham Town in a 1-0 defeat, meaning another season in the third tier for the club.
