The 2012/13 season marked a changing of the guard for Milan with a host of veterans,  including Nesta, Inzaghi, Gattuso, Zambrotta, van Bommel, and Seedorf, leaving the club in the summer. Thiago Silva, Ibrahimović, Cassano and Pato also left and these wholesale changes caused Milan to struggle in the 1st half of the season.

After the winter break, the squad managed to gain momentum and went on a 14-game unbeaten run in Serie A to lead a remarkable to eventually finish 3rd and secure a Champions League qualification spot.
