After their 3rd placed finish the previous year, Mallorca competed in the first group stage of the 2001/02 Champions League where they finished 3rd and dropped into the UEFA Cup. A 5-2 aggregate defeat saw them eliminated in the 3rd round.

Domestically the team struggled and 3 managers took charge throughout the season as the club were in and out of the relegation zone. 4 points in the 2 final games of the season ultimately saved the club from relegation, finishing in 16th place. Striker Albert Luque ended the season as the clubs top scorer with 15 goals in all competitions.
