2023-24 saw Dortmund eventually finish 5th in the Bundesliga which was enough to secure qualification for the following season's Champions League. Ironically, it was the same competition that provided the club's best hope of success as they reached the final of the competition for the 3rd time in their history.

In the match itself, a tight game eventually opened up in the 74th minute as Dani Carvajal scored before Vinícius Júnior followed up with a second for Los Blancos, just 9 minutes later.
