2021/22 was a difficult season for Barcelona's as their economic problems caught with them and they were forced to let club legend Leo Messi depart for Paris meaning it would be the first season in almost 20 years he wasn't representing La Blaugrana.

Performances on the pitch suffered and the team Barcelona failed to reach the knockout stages of the Champions League for the first time since 2003. A poor showing in the league saw Ronald Koeman replaced by a club legend Xavi, who managed to turn things around for the team leading them to 2nd in La Liga with the highlight of the season being a 4–0 thrashing of their El Clasico rivals at the Bernabéu.
