Worn across 2 seasons as the club's away shirt, 2003/04 season saw Paul Hart oversee a decent start, winning 5 of their first 7 games. Things started to unravel shortly after and after going 14 games without a win, the club were in the relegation zone. Hart's reign as manager was ended shortly after and Joe Kinnear was his replacement. The new manager revitalized the team and they climbed up the table to secure a 14th placed finish.
In 2004/05, Forest once again started poorly and the fans became restless very quickly. Threats of demonstrations against the team and management forced Kinnear to resign with Forest struggling at the foot of the Championship. Gary Megson was appointed as his replacement but he could not improve the team as they were relegated to League One. This made them the 1st former European Cup winners to suffer relegation to the 3rd tier of their domestic league.
