In 1996/97 Liverpool led the league for much of the season and had a 5 point lead at the top before the turn of the year. However, the team were overtaken, and it was United who ultimately won the league.

An appearance in the Cup Winners Cup ended at the semi-final stage. However, one bright point was the rise of a teenage Michael Owen. He scored on his debut, setting himself on the road to being one of the most feared strikers over the next few seasons.
